Multibuild - Travelodge refurbishment project

Multibuild Travelodge refurbishment projectThe Challenge
When undertaking the conversion of a mill into a 72-bedroom Travelodge hotel in Preston, Lancashire, Multibuild needed to ensure that future guests would enjoy a quiet night’s sleep. Furthermore, as a commercial application, Part E standards had to be exceeded in order that the hotel would be deemed fit for purpose.

As floating floors were used within the development, Multibuild required an acoustic solution to reduce impact and airborne noise transmission between rooms, whilst minimising construction heights.

Kevin Beech, site manager for Multibuild, explains: “The use of floating floors within the project meant headroom was at a premium, so we needed to source a suitable acoustic product that would also be compatible with timber floor applications.”

The Solution
Multibuild consulted CMS Acoustic Solutions to identify the most appropriate acoustic treatment for the project’s requirements. This resulted in the recommendation of SoundLay Plus, a high performance acoustic underlay solution. When applied to timber floors, SoundLay achieves airborne sound insulation of 49dB and impact sound insulation of 55dB.

A composite sandwich laminate with a thickness of just 12mm, SoundLay Plus is available in thin, easy to handle tiles which are quick and simple to install. Suitable for use in both commercial and residential applications, including new, retrofit and renovation projects, SoundLay Plus can also be used over concrete floors.

Results
Onsite test results concluded that SoundLay Plus exceeded the required airborne sound insulation of 43dB by achieving 55dB through party floors. Impact sound was so low that it could not be measured.

Mr Beech continues: “As a thin material, SoundLay Plus kept the build up depth to a minimum, and also achieved the necessary airborne and impact sound performance.”

By installing SoundLay Plus, Multibuild was able to exceed minimum Part E standards, and ensured that post completion, sound transmission in the hotel was well controlled.
