Saga Construction - Antibo’s Restaurant apartment conversion
The Challenge
When Saga Construction embarked upon its apartment
conversion above a busy restaurant in Leicester, it needed to source an acoustic solution that would overcome excessive
noise transmission emitted from below.
Furthermore, conversion works had to be undertaken around daily restaurant activity, which meant the separating floor could not be disturbed.
Prior to identifying an appropriate acoustic treatment, Saga carried out testing to determine actual noise levels generated from the restaurant during busy periods.
The assessment concluded that the restaurant could reach noise levels of up to 86dB, which resulted in levels of up to 60dB on the first floor. Consequently, an airborne sound reduction of 30dB was required to ensure effective insulation of the apartments.
David Weafer, director of Saga Construction, explains: “It was important that the restaurant could operate as normal whilst works were being carried out, so we needed to install an acoustic system that would allow us to carry out remedial work without affecting the business.”
The Solution
Saga sought the advice of CMS Acoustic Solutions,
who recommended the installation of Regupol
SoundBatten, a resilient composite batten floor system.
Comprising a resilient layer pre-bonded to deep (50mm x 70mm nominal) battens, Regupol SoundBatten was identified as the most appropriate solution to surmount the practical constraints of the project and deliver the necessary sound reduction.
Suitable for refurbishments and new builds, Regupol SoundBatten is certified for use with Robust Detail floor construction types MF1 (E-FC-1), MF8 (E-FC-2) and SF2 (E-FS:1).
Results
Following the installation of Regupol SoundBatten,
onsite test results confirmed the separating floor
between the restaurant and the apartments exceeded
the minimum airborne sound insulation specified in
Part E (43dB), by an additional 15dB.
With the recommendation for all developments to achieve at least 5dB greater than minimum Part E requirements, Saga far outstripped the statutory criteria to ensure the apartments would be acoustically sound.
Mr Weafer comments: “Not being able to insulate around the joists presented a real challenge, but CMS Acoustics was able to recommend a solution which enabled us to overcome this barrier and complete the job without having to disturb restaurant activity.”
