Home Cinema

home cinemaThe Challenge
Where luxury dwellings contain a purpose-built home cinema room, enhancing the acoustics within the room is essential to gain maximum enjoyment from the space. With a purpose-built cinema constructed in a family home, a range of acoustic treatments needed to be identified to optimise the acoustics of the room, as well as minimise the transfer of sound to the adjacent family rooms.

The Solution
CMS Acoustics recommended and supplied a range of bespoke solutions to improve the acoustics in the room. To optimise the reverberation times within the cinema, approved installers, Pace Installations Limited, fitted 16mm thick Vertiface Composition panels in ‘Noir’ on the interior walls. For additional sound absorption properties, the panels were installed onto timber battens to create an air void between the panels and the wall.

A flexible acoustic wall covering system, Vertiface Composition was also specified for the ceiling area of the cinema to absorb sound frequencies not absorbed by the wall panels. Selected in ‘theatre’, a stylish deep red colour, the 12mm thick ceiling panels complemented the black Vertiface Composition panels and the room’s gold art deco fittings.

To minimise the breakout of low frequency noise from the cinema to the living area above, 5kg CMS Barrier Mat, a cost effective high-density sound barrier, was installed between two layers of plasterboard in the ceiling.

Prior to the installation of the carpet and cinema seats, 12mm SoundLay Plus was applied to the subfloor to help control impact and airborne noise. Designed for timber floor applications, SoundLay Plus is a premium acoustic underlay system with proven performance levels of 55dB and 49dB for impact and airborne sound respectively.

Results
CMS Acoustics’ bespoke range of treatments provided high performance solutions for the walls and ceilings of the home cinema room, improving the acoustics, while complementing the interior design of the room.

Jamie Preston, construction director at Pace Installations Limited, comments: “Working in a private residence presents a different set of installation challenges to a normal building site in terms of considerate construction. As CMS Acoustics’ products are always easy to handle and use, we were able to install the products efficiently, completing the project with minimal disruption to the occupants.”
