Midland Hotel
The Challenge
Regupol 4515 Multi helped prevent impact sound generated by footfall from disturbing guests at the Midland Hotel in Morecambe.
Originally built in the 1930s, the iconic Midland hotel in Morecambe is a Grade II listed building, overlooking the coastline of Morecambe Bay. As part of an £11 million project by property developer Urban Splash, the Art Deco hotel has been restored and refurbished to create a contemporary environment with 44 guest suites.
Paul Jones, development manager, Urban Splash, comments: “The Midland Hotel is the first hotel to be developed and managed by Urban Splash. Every aspect of the restoration had to be carefully planned at the design stage to achieve a unique balance between preserving the original Art Deco features and character of this iconic building, whilst meeting the demands of the modern hospitality market.”
At design stage, it was decided that an acoustic treatment was required in the bedrooms, to prevent impact sound generated by the footfall of guests from causing a disturbance. As such, an impact sound solution needed to be identified which would not only accommodate the irregular shape of the guest rooms, but would also be compatible with the final floor finish of carpet.
The Solution
Acoustic consultants on the project, RPS Gregory, specified Regupol 4515 Multi, a high performance polyurethane (PUR) foam and cork acoustic underlay, for the hotel bedrooms. Available exclusively through CMS Acoustics in the UK, the material delivers superior impact sound insulation of 18dB, as proven by extensive independent testing.
Regupol 4515 Multi is supplied in standard thicknesses of 3mm or 4.5mm and in 18m and 20m rolls respectively. Resistant to ageing and deformation, the material offers long term performance without ageing or collapsing, even under high point loads. Manufactured without blowing agents, Regupol 4515 Multi has zero Ozone Depletion Potential and zero Global Warming Potential.
Quick and easy to install, the material was simply cut to size and bonded to the subfloors, with the final floor finish laid directly on top. Compatible with any final floor finish, the material provided an ideal solution for the carpeted floor selected for the guest rooms at the hotel.
Results
At the Midland Hotel, 700m2 of Regupol 4515 Multi was installed to attenuate impact sound generated by footfall in the 44 guest suites. Designed as a flexible, high performance acoustic underlay, the treatment provided impact sound insulation of up to 34dB with the carpet finish, effectively preventing impact sound from causing a disturbance at the hotel.
