Victoria Mills
The Challenge
Victoria Mills is a residential apartment development in Shipley Glen, Bradford, incorporating a mill conversion alongside a stylish new build block. Commissioned to manage the design and construction of the new build element, which comprises 167 apartments over eight storeys, Quarmby Construction had to achieve Part E compliance while keeping within overall programme budget.
As such, Quarmby undertook initial on-site sound testing to identify what measures were required to deliver the apartments to Part E standards. With no sound treatment installed, testing revealed airborne sound was adequately controlled, but highlighted that additional impact sound insulation was necessary.
While an impact sound treatment was required, Quarmby had to find a product that would keep the floor to ceiling heights to a minimum, in order to maximise the living space throughout the development.
The Solution
Following consultation with CMS Acoustic Solutions, a suitable cost effective impact sound solution was identified in the form of Regupol 4515 Eco, a recycled rubber crumb and cork compound acoustic underlay.
Regupol 4515 Eco, part of the Regupol 4515 range of acoustic underlays, is distributed exclusively through CMS Acoustics in the UK. The material is supplied in standard thicknesses of 3mm and 4.5mm, and rolls of 20m and 12m respectively. Quick and easy to install, Regupol 4515 Eco is bonded to the subfloor directly beneath the final floor finish, making it ideal for new builds and refurbishments. Offering long-term performance, Regupol 4515 Eco will not collapse under high point loads and is recommended for use with laminate and hardwood floors. Independent sound tests have shown that the Regupol 4515 range of acoustic underlays will meet the requirements of Part E with any final floor finish laid.
Results
At the Victoria Mills development, Regupol 4515 Eco acoustic underlay enabled the first phase of the new build apartments to achieve Part E compliance, confirmed by pre-completion testing. The success of the first phase led Quarmby to use Regupol 4515 Eco to control impact sound in the second phase of the development.
Colin Gebbie, contracts manager at Quarmby Construction, concludes: “We sought a cost effective treatment that would deliver the required level of sound insulation and maintain the required floor to ceiling heights, without the need to apply an additional screed layer or floating floor. We found all of this in Regupol 4515 Eco.”
