Priory Community SchoolCMS Acoustics takes the din out of dining at the autism.west midlands school for autism

When the noisy dining hall at the autism.west midlands school for autism was identified as a problem area that could cause stress and anxiety for autistic children, it was necessary for the acoustics to be adequately controlled. In light of this, CMS Acoustics has provided its Melamine acoustic foam with self-adhesive backing for the ceiling of the school dining hall to reduce reverberated noise.

CMS Acoustics’ Melamine acoustic foam is a high performing, adaptable material that is suitable for a variety of settings. At the autism.west midlands school for autism, the Melamine foam was used in the dining hall which, due to its concrete design, intensified noise caused by metal knives and forks.

The Melamine acoustic foam is white in colour and available in a variety of sheet sizes. To cover the whole dining hall ceiling area of 44m² at the autism.west midlands school for autism, CMS Acoustics Melamine was supplied in sheets of 2.5m x 1.25m x 30mm thick.

John Cashmore, estates manager at the autism.west midlands school for autism, comments: “Due to the special requirements of our pupils, the Melamine acoustic foam needed to be kept out of the children’s reach, so it was installed on the ceiling. We were able to carry this out ourselves, which is testament to the product and CMS Acoustics’ clear installation guidelines.”

The flexible nature of CMS Acoustics’ Melamine makes it appropriate for high temperature applications, with a thermal conductivity value of 0.0032 to 0.0034 W/mK. This was a principal concern at the autism.west midlands school for autism as the first floor directly above the ceiling of the dining hall uses under-floor heating.

David Holder, director of CMS Acoustics, comments: “We are always able to provide a suitable solution for any project, whether it is for a new build, retro-fit or special environment such as the dining hall in the school’s concrete building. By supplying our Melamine acoustic foam, we were able to reduce both background and vocal noise by up to 40 percent and ultimately decrease anxiety.”

As well as CMS-manufactured products, CMS Acoustics delivers innovative solutions through a number of exclusive third party partnerships with market leading manufacturers. This includes the Regupol range of floor products from German manufacturer, BSW.
